Patrick Dougherty, LBMA

Lone Pine, California
In February 2019, I joined the Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA), artist Patrick Dougherty and son Sam in Lone Pine, California to document the harvest of over 2,000 pounds of willow from an authorized, private farmland. Dougherty creates living sculptures using natural materials that decay over time. The three-day harvest consisted of cutting, baling, and transporting bundles from field to truck with a crew of eight people. Following the harvest, Dougherty intriciately wove thousands of willow saplings with the help of over 100 volunteers on the museum’s grounds. In March 2019, Buddy Buddy was completed: five earthly sculptures 25 feet above ground.
